I'm the worst, new diabetic kitty mom ever!
My Pebbles (12 y/o) was diagnosed with FD two weeks ago so we are still going through the eat/won't eat, insulin, no insulin with our first crash this weekend. She's on Humulin U100 1x day @ 3 units. She also didn't eat breakfast on Sat morning so didn't give her the insulin since I'm under the impression that no food in the stomach, insulin shouldn't be given. Well, WRONG! She started crashing on Saturday pm, of course after my vet closed. I called friends with kitties with FD and read over the felinediabetes.com link - all of her symptoms stated she had low blood sugar. So - relying on some friends who stated I could give her up to a tablespoon of Karo, I started giving her 1/2 teaspoons at a time. Her symptoms were disorientation, staggering, a creepy sort of walk, and finally perceived blindness.
She kept throwing up the Karo, so I switched to force feeding which also did not bring her out of her stooper. After being up with her all night, the emergency room opened at 0630 and I was waiting at the door. She was off the charts with blood sugar, not low at all. So, I did more harm than good, especially with no insulin. I will never make another decision on her well being without taking a blood test first. So, while she's still at the hospital and I've spent $800 thus far in just one day with more to come, I need to prepare myself for her homecoming so I can provide the care she requires.
I think I have the blood monitoring meter down, but where exactly do you prick her ear?
Meanwhile I'm tired, exhausted actually, and emotionally drained. I have to be the absolute worst Mom on this earth!
The last I heard from the hospital (4 hours ago) they said her sugar level was still off the charts and they had her resting on a heating pad to get her temp up (was 95, was supposed to be 101).
Can someone please tell me things can better for her/us?
